Swim Lessons by Amber Gray:

Sessions are for 2 weeks (8 classes total) and each class is approximately 30-40 min. long. Classes are taught Monday to Thursday with Fridays used as a make up day in case of bad weather.

Class sizes are small, no more than 5 students per class.

Private lessons are offered.

Classes are scheduled by Amber according to ages and ability to swim. First class begins at 9:00 and last class is usually 11:30.

Session 1: June 1^st thru 10^th

Session 2: June 14^th thru 24^th (evening classes will be offered during this session)

Session 3: July 12^th thru July 22^nd (evening classes will be offered during this session)

Classes are $60. Private lessons are $120. There is a multiple child discount for siblings.

You made a New Year’s resolution– for the eighth year running – to lose enough girth to take your clothes out of the Museum of Waist lines (formerly known as your closet). "Last year was our first spring Sidewalk Sale and the response was unbelievable. In celebration of NanoDays, the Oklahoma WONDERtorium will have a special nano-science display at the Stillwater Public Library for the entire month of April 2010.

NanoDays is a national celebration of educational programs that teach nanoscale science and engineering. During NanoDays students and their families have the opportunity to learn about the potential future impact of Nano-Science inventions. NanoDays celebrations are put on by participants in the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network – 200 science museums, research centers and universities across the nation. "Eat Your Words!" Edible Book Festival, Stillwater Ok

Eat Your Words!

Attention all bibliophiles, book artists, and food lovers! The Stillwater Literacy Council invites you to attend and participate in the “Eat Your Words! Edible Book Festival” on Saturday March 27. The festival will take place at Stillwater Public Library and will benefit the Stillwater Literacy Council.

What in the world is an edible book festival? It is an event where participants create edible art that has something to do with books (in shape or content). These edible delights are exhibited for the general public to admire, vote for favorites in a variety of categories, and then eat them!

Individuals and groups are invited to submit entries, and admission is free with a submission (group entries get 2 free admissions). The Stillwater community is welcome to attend, vote, and eat for a $5.00 ($10 for families) donation to the Stillwater Literacy Council. The festival will begin at 1:00pm on the 2^nd floor auditorium of the Stillwater Public Library.

After votes are cast and tallied, prizes will be awarded in the categories of Most Representative of a Book, Funniest/Punniest, Best Individual Entry, Best Group Entry, and People’s Choice. Prizes include: Chipotle Mexican Grill is awarding a “Burrito Buck” to every entry along with a 2 for 1 coupon for everyone who attends the festival; Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Marble Slab Creamery, The Hideaway, Orange Leaf, Coney Island, Old School Bagel Cafe, Crepe Myrtle Restaurant, and Pita Pit are generously providing gift certificates; Company’s Comin’ II is contributing a gourmet gift basket; and the Oklahoma City Zoo Amphitheater is generously providing concert tickets.

How long have you lived in Stillwater? My family and I have lived in Stillwater since March 2003.

What do you love about living in Stillwater? I like the University and what it has to offer, but I also like that Stillwater is a small enough town that I can know people everywhere I go.

Where is your favorite place to go in Stillwater? My favorite places are all the downtown eating and drinking spots I can walk to from my office as well as stadiums for OSU sporting events and Hastings because I'm a pop culture junkie.

My hobbies are: playing the guitar, watching films, reading books, playing golf and Texas Hold'em poker.

Favorite book that I've read recently is Christ Plays In 10,000 Places by Eugene Peterson.

Favorite movie is Magnolia directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.

Do you have children? My wife, Rachel, and I have two daughters. Madeleine is 10 years old and Eliza is 7 years old. The girls attend Sangre Ridge Elementary and love calling Stillwater home.

A little about Grace Church Stillwater:

Grace Church Stillwater was begun in 2003 at the initiation of the Southwest Church Planting Network (in cooperation with the North Texas Presbytery of the PCA) and on the prayers of believers in Oklahoma as well as all over the United States. The founding pastor, Jonathan Dorst, had a vision to plant a church that would speak grace to both believers and unbelievers and unite people from all walks of life in worship and service.
The church began in the Dorst's living room on Sunday nights, but quickly outgrew that and started meeting in a storefront on Main Street. The church began meeting for worship on Sunday mornings in February of 2004 at the Best Western hotel in Stillwater. In October of that year, the church was able to relocate to Westwood Elementary School to have more space. In the early years we took our first steps in outreach through the arts, with open mic nights, concerts (Derek Webb, Sandra McCracken, Nathan Clark George), guitar clinics, and a songwriter's circle.
We have always had a strong college student presence, with Mike & Victoria Dodson, among others, doing weekly Bible Studies and mentoring of students and young couples. In the Summer of 2009, Daniel & Taylor Killian moved to Stillwater to start RUF (Reformed University Fellowship), a ministry that reaches students for Christ and equips them to serve in the church.
In November 2006, the church ordained its first set of elders, who shepherd the church and oversee its proclamation of the Word. In the Spring of 2010, the church is ordaining its first group of deacons, who lead the mercy and service aspects of the church.

Committed exercisers know the sense of accomplishment at the end of a workout. Those uninitiated in the pleasurable rewards of regular physical activity, however, remain skeptical. After all, how can something as basic as exercise not only improve one’s life today, but perhaps even also save one’s life tomorrow?

While not all types of exercise are appropriate for everyone, everyone can benefit from some type of exercise. Movement!

How much is an individual decision, but numerous studies indicate that hours of intense exercise are not necessary to reap the benefits. It is recommended that most adults accumulate 30 minutes or more of moderate activity on most days of the week.

Moderate activity raises your heart rate without leaving you out of breath. For those who are so inclined, exercising at slightly higher intensities for longer periods of time can bring about even greater health benefits.

Commit to be active every day. Soon you will be hooked. It won’t happen overnight, and there may be some aspects you find less enjoyable (some people just can’t get over the sweating part of it), but the sense of feeling healthier, will overpower the negative attitudes toward exercise that you may still be harboring. Time to get started.

Oklahoma WONDERtorium’s Young at Art program now available

Children ages zero to 12 months of age can become a part of one of Oklahoma WONDERtorium’s most innovative hands-on learning experiences – Young at Art.

Young at Art kits are available for families to check out and take home from the Stillwater Public Library and OSU Family Resource Center. Kits have also been placed at Lincoln Alternative Academy, Kids Under Construction and Early Head Start.

“Young at Art was created to introduce young children and their parents to the therapeutic and playful functions of art,” said Debbie Williams, Oklahoma WONDERtorium, Program Coordinator. “Fifteen unique activity kits including elements of visual art, dance and music are rotated through childcare facilities or can be checked out by parents to use at home.”

Young at Art uses bright colors, pictures, music, soft sounds and textures to encourage sensory integration and motor skill development.

Williams said the kits strengthen family bonds and increases an adult’s knowledge of parenting.
“The kits allow parents and caregivers to interact with the child at different developmental stages during the child’s first year,” she said. “For example, if the kits are checked out when the child is birth to 3 months, they can be checked out again for different objectives when the child is 3 months to 6 months and again at 6 months to 9 months.”

Children who are not socially or emotionally ready for school cannot form the brain connections to promote cognitive learning. Art assists children in expressing themselves before they are verbal. With Young at Art, childcare workers and parents are able to assist children toward a healthy outcome.
The Oklahoma WONDERtorium is applying new ways to extend the Museum Without Walls outreach programs to new partners. This is done without any additional cost due to the generous funding from individuals, businesses and foundations.

When Stress Triggers Overeating

In addition to keeping us alive, eating serves countless psychological, social and cultural purposes. We eat to celebrate and comfort. When people eat in response to emotional drives, such as feeling stressed, bored or tired, rather than in response to true physical hunger, it is called emotional eating.

Eating and stress
Stress often throws a wrench into balanced lifestyles, interfering with plans to exercise, eat well and stay organized. Stress commonly affects appetite and food choices. Under stress, some people lose their appetite, while some people remain unaffected and others find themselves eating more than usual.

Increase self-awareness
If you tend to overeat when you are stressed, self-monitoring will help change this behavior. Emotional eaters who monitor their eating behaviors often find that the drive to eat masks unpleasant feelings, such as anxiety, depression, loneliness, fatigue, boredom and anger. They learn to differentiate between "mouth hunger" or emotional eating, and "stomach hunger" or true physical hunger. They uncover situations and feelings that trigger overeating.

Address sources of triggers
If stress triggers overeating, address the sources of stress. Look for solutions to problems at hand, talk them over with a friend, or write in a journal. Acknowledge and address feelings of depression, anger or anxiety. Do whatever you can to reduce feelings of stress.
Most people find that overeating tends to occur in specific places and specific times. A common time is at home during the evening. Possible solutions include engaging in a hobby that keeps your mind and hands busy, such as going out and exercising.

Exercise daily
Exercise reduces stress, helps control appetite, gives you energy and improves sleep quality. All of these factors help reduce emotional eating.

Get more R & R
Fatigue is one of the most common causes of overeating. Getting plenty of rest and relaxation helps manage stress and reduce overeating. Some emotional eaters find that they overeat because eating is the only time they relax, enjoy life and reward themselves. These folks can learn to enlarge their repertoire of "healthy pleasures" so that they have other ways to nurture themselves besides eating.

Avoid restrictive diets
Diets that are very low in calories (fewer than 1,400 calories per day) or that restrict certain food groups are psychologically self-defeating, often leading to food cravings and too much focus on food and eating. Have you ever noticed that the more you think about not eating the more you want to eat? Such diets also rarely lead to long-term weight control and good health.

Cushing Students Discover Nano-Size Plant Viruses Through Traveling Interactive Education Program
STILLWATER, OK (February 16, 2010) – Fifth graders in Cushing, Oklahoma, are discovering the world of nano-sized viruses through Plant Virus Exploration, an Oklahoma WONDERtorium Museum Without Walls (MWW) program. The two-hour, interactive course uses a variety of hands-on, play-to-learn activities to teach children how viruses infect plants and animals, how viruses are transmitted, and how viruses replicate. After concluding a highly successful Plant Virus Exploration series for students throughout Stillwater in mid-December, the WONDERtorium is continuing the program at schools in Cushing.

Marcia Hargrove, First Grade Teacher at Sunnyside Elementary, has played an instrumental part in bringing Plant Virus Exploration to Cushing schools. She personally visited teachers to raise awareness of this and other programs the museum offers to schools. Working with Oklahoma WONDERtorium Programs Coordinator, Debbie Williams, the museum has expanded their programming to Cushing Public Schools.

During the workshop, students will actively participate and interact with each other. Beginning with hand washing and polite sneezing, children share what they know about the transmission of human viruses, and then bridge that knowledge to the plant world. They examine tiny virus-transmitting insects, use pocket microscopes to explore a microscopic view of everyday classroom items, and discover how very tiny a nanometer is. Students discuss the destructive and beneficial effects of viruses and their impact on environment and society. Finally, students become familiar with the basic make-up of a virus - as teams, they race to replicate models of viruses using geometric blocks and Velcro.

“Students have general knowledge of human viruses, like cold and flu, but they may not know that viruses also infect plants,” said Debbie Williams. “Plant Virus Exploration brings a nano-sized world of discovery to life by offering hands-on investigation and inquiry of viruses.”

Amanda Leigh, a teacher at Sunnyside Elementary in Cushing said, “I thought the whole experience was wonderful! I loved how the instructor used several different learning techniques, so that all students stayed focused. I feel like every single student in my class learned the basics about viruses. Once more, I would just like to say that I very much enjoyed this experience and I hope to have you all again next year.”

“The Plant Virus Exploration program is very valuable in helping teachers engage students in meaningful science activities that excite them and show them opportunities for a career in a science field,” said Melody Aufill, a teacher at Yale Elementary in Stillwater.

Susan Coltharp, a teacher at Richmond Elementary in Stillwater, agrees saying: “This was an excellent exploration. Debbie did a great job and managed the kids well. The hands-on approach was excellent for the kid's interest!”

“This program is so awesome. It reinforces our Micro-Worlds unit with the wonderful pictures and hands-on activities. I would like the website to order microscopes. Thank you so much for offering this presentation to our 5th graders,” said Linda Davis, at teacher at Westwood Elementary in Stillwater.

Hi! I am Joshua. Let me introduce to you my grandmom (Wanda Haught) and my mom (Lynn Ingalls.) They are the owners of the Lazy i Farms. These two ladies are the light of my life. My mom is my school teacher as I am home schooled along with my other two brothers who are still at home and my grandmom is my “spoiler.” These two ladies sorta “dote” without spoiling me. I also have five brothers: ages 29, 26, 19, 17 and 14. Then there is me: age 7.

My family and grandparents moved to Oklahoma from Texas in 2000. If you ask my granddad, he will tell you he is a proud Texan and not to ask my grandmother if she is a Texan because if she is she will tell you and if she is not you will hurt her feelings. (Needless to say she is a full blood born in the state of TEXAS woman!) All my family hails from Texas with the exception of my dad and myself. My dad was born in Louisiana and I am a proud Oklahoman. My grandparents are retired and my dad is a professor at Oklahoma State University and you know what my mom does.

When I was two, my mom noticed some red rough spots on my body and my face. Now you know how moms and grandmoms can be – doting! Not wanting any blemishes to be on this last son/grandson my mom hauls me into the doctor. Each trip to the doctor’s office brought a new bar of soap into our house. Again, you know about grandmothers. When she bought soap, she bought many bars. In all fairness I did spend a lot of time at her house and as many nights as I could talk my parents into. I was finally diagnosed with eczema and all the different soaps that had been bought were not doing me any good. So the doctor recommended a very, very expensive cream. The cream did nothing for me and after my mom researched the side effects of the cream she threw it into the trash can. Just wish you could have seen my grandmom when she saw my mom open up the trash can and toss that very, very expensive cream in. Mom went back to the internet and did some more research on my problem and discovered goat milk soap.

Guess what the wonderful and adoring women did for me right after they discovered the goat milk soap? Oh, I didn’t tell you that they also found that I was also unable to process cow’s milk? Those sweet city ladies of mine went out and bought two does (that’s female goats for those of you who do not know goat language.) Know what else they did for me? They actually learned to milk the goats. Eventually my granddad bought them an electric milking machine. Boy! Talk about stealing the show from me.

Let’s see they have me, goats and lots of goat milk. Now they are selling the milk to customers who come out to the farm and pick it up. Next thing you know they are making soap for me. AND guess what? There are a whole lot of people are out there just like me with skin problems. If you know any of these people with skin problems, send them to www.lazyifarms.com. Use a sprinkle of common sense and a dash of logic.

The recent Lancet publication of the Million Women Study (MWS) removes any lingering doubt that there’s something wrong with conventional HRT (see Million Woman Study in the UK, Published in The Lancet, Gives New Insight into HRT and Breast Cancer for details). Why would supplemental estrogen and a progestin (e.g. not real progesterone) increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer by 30 percent or more? Other studies found that these same synthetic HRT hormones increase one’s risk of heart disease and blood clots (strokes), and do nothing to prevent Alzheimer’s disease. When you pass through puberty and your sex hormones surge, they don’t make you sick—they cause your body to mature into adulthood and be healthy. But, the hormones used in conventional HRT are somehow not right—they are killing women by the tens of thousands.

Want to Lose Weight? Then Pay Attention!

Picture this: You're sitting in a movie theater, popcorn and soda in hand, chatting with friends and waiting for the show to start. Finally, the lights go down and you reach for the popcorn and you realize you're scraping the bottom of the barrel.
That's right — you managed to eat the whole thing while you weren't paying attention.

The good news is you're not alone. A new study of healthy-weight women revealed that even restrained eaters consumed significantly more calories when they were distracted than when they were alone without outside stimuli.

Researchers from Hospital Hotel-Dieu in Paris, France recruited 41 women, ages 26 to 55, to eat lunch once a week under four different conditions in a laboratory setting.

They were alone without distraction, alone while listening to recorded instruction on how to focus on the taste of their food, and alone while listening to a tape of a detective story.

And they ate lunch with three other women who were also participating in the study.

Despite reporting equal levels of hunger under all four conditions, they ate considerably more calories while listening to the detective story.

Researchers recommend that people who wish to maintain or lose weight avoid eating while watching TV, talking on the phone or listening to music, all activities capable of derailing even the best weight-loss efforts.

How Old Would You Be, If You Didn't Know How Old You Were?

Think about that question. If suddenly your birth date was stricken from your memory, how old would you feel? Consider your physical health, your mental health, and most importantly, how you feel about yourself. Would you be younger or older than your birth date?

Now consider those people that you know in your life of whom it's often said, "he/she is so young for their age." Why is that? Generally these are people who are fully engaged in their lives. They "make" rather than "take" time for the things they care about-despite the same pressures we all have. Chances are they to have jobs, children, aging parents, and a mortgage. In spite of this they participate in forms of exercise, and leisure activities that they enjoy. They get sick, and have work deadlines, but get right back at it, once these pass. They also make conscious decisions about everything from their eating habits, to letting go of worry, and laughing.

Every one of us has the capability of living this way regardless of our circumstances. It takes a conscious decision to start making changes that serve us, one "simple step" at a time. Keep in mind that these do not have to be enormous, life changing habits that require a complete schedule re-write. They can include starting a bedtime ritual so you can sleep more peacefully, drinking less caffeine late in the day, bringing whole fruit to work every day, beginning a walking ritual at least twice a week, or performing some strength training exercises for 10 minutes in the evening.

Here's an exercise for you to try that can be life changing. Think about 2-3 things that you could start doing today that would have the greatest impact on your personal health, and write them down. Now look at your weekly schedule, and see where these new habits might fit, or, where you might write down a reminder for yourself, e.g. "Drink more water", "Last caffeinated beverage by 2:00 p.m." Make these appointments with yourself and treat them with the same sense of purpose that you do those with others. If you have to cancel for some reason, re-schedule immediately.

Remember to start with small changes. These are the ones that will build your confidence, and lead to larger ones. Are you younger, or older than your birth date? Start today, and start feeling younger.

Quench-Bud's is new to Stillwater. They opened in December. Quench-Bud’s of Stillwater originated in Bartlesville. Bartlesville has two locations. The Stillwater location is just 2 Blocks from Eskimo Joes at 139 S. Duck Street. You can zip thru for breakfast, lunch, snacks and drinks. They are fast and convenient and very affordable.
